oil pump replacement

Took the boat out today, new prop, new hydrofoil, running really good, then I lose all oil pressure on the guage. brought the boat back in once I noticed there was no pressure. I did notice the temp was normal 140-145 high for the hour and a half we had it out. Don't know if that makes a differance, seems to me like if the engine wasn't circulating oil it would get hot with a quickness?

Anyways, I have read the post I could find about it, I will ground the sender lead to the guage, if it pegs out, the guage is good, I guess I'll look for a mechanical guage for the oil pressure from the tube, is that right?

OK the real question, and this I guess would be worst case scenario, if the oil pump is bad, will I have to remove the motor from the boat to change the oil pump? It's a 1990 Bayliner cuddy, 20' Alpha one with a 4.3LX? Please say no.but be honest.

Re: oil pump replacement

If the engine didn't start making any knocking or tapping noise you may have gotten lucky. May just be a guage or sender problem. Use a mechanical guage to check the pressure.

If the oil pump did fail the engine most certainly has to be removed, and so does the drive.

Re: oil pump replacement

Ayuh,.........

IF the Oil Pump had actually Quit,......You'd have Never made it to Shore............
When an Oil Pump Quits,.... The motor will Not run without Oil Pressure,....It takes Seconds to Trash the Crankshaft.........

I'd think that either the Gauge, or the Sending Unit might be Bad,.......
Or a Wire is Broken/ Loose.............

Btw,......
I wouldn't go to Just a Mechanical Gauge,.... Fix the Ele. Gauge.....
Having that little Oil Line running the length of the boat is Another Problem waiting to Happen......
Mechancal Oil Pressure Gauges are Great for Checking the Ele. 1,....... I've got a small Mechanical Oil Pressure,+ Water Temp Gauges mounted in the Engine Box,.... But I still use the Ele. Gauges at the Dash........
