Oil pump ????

I am new here. I have a Triton 21 Fish & Ski rigg with a Johnson 225 1999. I called a boat mechanic shop and wanted a quote to just check things out. I got the boat from a friend and it was new I have had it 2 summers with no problems. The question is he want's to replace the oil pump for 300.00 to start with and go from there. Is that right. He said every 5 yrs this pump needs replaced. I know about the water pump I do them every 2 yrs in all my other boats.

Welcome!

Sounds like you need a new shop.........If the pump has been working fine since 99 there's no reason to think it will suddenly quit. That motor came with the OMS pump which is a very good system.

The pump may have developed a fuel leak,as I've seen that happen.But those pumps are not scheduled maintenance to replace.You do it when they leak or don't pump.Never seen one not pump oil,usually they won't pump gas.

Thanks for the info. It sounded like he wanted to sell me some thing I didn't need. I just want the boat checked and ready to go out at any time. I live in Oklahoma so if the weather is ok I like to go out. Thank's again for your help.

Was just wondering if you had a running problem? If so what is it doing? Is that what made you check with shop, or just considering routine check-up?

The boat runs fine just want it checked out. The old owner had never put it in the shop. I get 5600 rpm out of it. Just a check up.

change the plugs, and lower unit oil, along with the drain and vent washers, and keep on boating. find a new mech.

Sounds like your mechanic wants a new boat for himself. I'd be hunting for a new one.

Thank guys I have been out of it for a while he just said maybe change it but for 300.00. I don't want to hurt anything. Just have fun. I did change the plugs and gear oil ( every year )
