Hello all,
Iam new in here and trying to learn. I am mechanically inclined. so here is my story hope you guys can help me out.I had this boat given to me about a month ago and have been trying to get it running good. I have a 77 Johnson 70 hp. I will give you a little history on the motor since I have had it. Since i have had it i have replaced one of the coils that i wasnt getting any spark. so now when i run the motor i was noticing that i was getting an oil sludge build up on the exhaust port on the prop it also has a little water in it like white spots. I changed the gear oil and that looks good. after removing the lower unit today I noticed a build up of oil water spots and metal particles in the exhaust port of the lower unit. I did a compression test on the motor before i took the lower unit apart. it was right around 85lbs in all 3 cyliders, after reading a little on hear i am guessing that is low. what do you think i should do? should i just can the motor or is it worth fixing? do you thing my rings are bad? thanks guys

Re: oil residue and metal shavings in exhaust port

Is there something wrong with the way it runs?
You might try de-carboning the motor to get the compression up.
Read "De-carbing the motor" in this post:

yea I planned on de-carbing i guess my main concern is what are the metal particles from? When i start it, it seems to run good except at high idle it kind of pops alittle. I havent yet had it in the water, just had ear muffs on it.

Re: oil residue and metal shavings in exhaust port

well i took it upon myself today to take the heads off to peak at the pistons.
they dont look to bad except for number 2 there is a chip on the piston right were it meets the cylinder wall and there is a scatch on the cylinder wall going up and down. i think at this point i will probably replace the gaskets and tstat and see how long it last.
I will see if i can get some pics up of the piston. Any ideas let me know. thanks
