Oil Residue on OMS/VRO Pump?

Hi guys,

I have a couple questions for those who have worked on these pumps. The pump is the newer OMS pump on a 2004 50HP Johnson.

There always seems to be 2-stroke oil residue on the pump, it actually puddles a little bit in the crevices between the air diaphragm and fuel side of the pump. I also notice it near the fittings on the oil side of the pump and on the rubber pieces that hold the pump to the air silencer. It does not drip off the pump and puddle anywhere, just on the pump itself.

It has been like this for as long as I can remember. I took it apart last spring to try and find the leak and found nothing. I ran it all last year with no problems and no alarms. It was cleaned last year before I reassembled it but the oil residue returned.

Is this normal for this residue to be on the pump?

I also noticed that over the winter there was no oil in the clear fitting to verify oil to the pump. I pumped the bulb of the oil tank and it returned. I assume this could be a normal condition caused during storage. When I do pump the bulb though the pump will make a slight hissing sound like air or oil is moving then it firms up for a few hours then I can repeat this process. I never notice any oil leaking when doing this.

I am very close to just removing the whole unit and premixing. I would prefer not to since the motor spends most of its time trolling and I like the fact that the pumps ratio is slightly leaner at idle. Which brings up my last question.

While trolling at around 1000-1200 RPM what ratio of fuel to oil is being pumped by the newer OMS pumps?

Thanks again Guys,
