Oil Seal removal

How does one remove the oil seal beneath the impeller? This is on a 1960 Johnson Seahorse 5.5hp CD-17 motor. I bought a new seal, and started trying to remove the old one before running into the problems. Then I went online and saw people say that it shouldn't ever need to be replaced. That doesn't help me now and nobody talked about removal.

I've trashed the old one and it's still in place. Is there a special oil seal puller for small seals like this, like a pulley remover on a car? I asked around at hardware and autopart stores but nobody had anything.

Who are these people who say that it never needs to be replaced ????-----The factory had a special puller that screwed into the seal.-----The risk here when you start using brute force is damage to the expensive housing.------Use a Dremel tool ( carefully ) and cut the seal in 2 places.------Then it will be easy to remove without damage.----Work like your " painless " dentist !

The painless dentist did his job. I wouldn't have thought of using a Dremel. I had to go buy a different bit since the standard cutting wheels are way to big. Thanks for the help. New seal is in and the impeller is going back together. Thanks for all of your help racerone!

It did take a lot of patience and a stead hand to do it. I wouldn't recommend it to the faint of heart, but it is definitely doable. I was worried the entire time about cutting the housing. That healthy dose of fear probably kept me from cutting too quickly.
