oil seals for driven gear on Alpha 1

Does anyone know the procedure for changing the two oil seals in the upper gear housing. These are the two seals that are below the driven gear. I'm confused on wether they should be pressed in or just hand pushed. Also, does it matter what orientation the lip on the seals should face?

Thanks in advance!

I just did this on my outdrive. I hand (hammer) pressed them in, you should make sure they are all the way in or the gear won't sit properly. The lips should face up, orientation is very important here.

Thanks freebeetony -- I'll try pressing them in... what did you use to press them? A hammer and what else? Also, did you apply loctite on the outer edge of the seals?

Thanks again.

I used a long screw driver and I put a piece of a rag on the end so it wouldn't be too sharp when I hit it. I didn't use any loctite. Where did you hear about that?

My manual mentioned loctite but I assume it's used for extra stability -- so the seals don't move over time. Not to help leaks.

How far did the first seal go down? Did the second seal need to be pressed as well?

Hello
I looked in my alpha manual and the larger seal loads in from the gear side if the shaft and the little one drives in from the lower unit side, I cannot remember on the aplha gen II I will have to look in the manual at the shop.if you have a large groove or some rust at the seal area then use some of the upper cap bearing shimms to move the inner seal up about .03". the only speacial tool needed is the driver fore the seal and the spanner wrench for the yoke.
which drive is this? alpah gen 1 or gen 2
Good luck and keep poisting. the locktite helps hold the seal and helps prevent any leaks between the seal and housing

You should be able to see that the top seal is all the way down, install this one first.

I thought the top seal went in lip up and the bottom seal went in lip down.

DougV>

Djvan,

The diagram in my manual shows exactly the orientation you described. However, in the text it says to put both seals with lip up. Kinda conflicting.

It is my thought that the upper seal retains oil so lip should face the oil. Lower seal keeps out (retains) water so lip should face water. I could very possibly be wrong. This is the way I positioned mine recently.

DougV>
