I was wondering if anyone knew when, and whether to change the oil seals in the water pump base? There is an upper and lower seal. Mine look fine seemed plyable and spring inside didn't look strecthed. Where the drive shaft "flares out" at the end there was eveidence of water, a little calcium deposits. I dont know what that means, but that was the reason i started thinking about replacing them...Any suggestions?

I'm not aware of any recommendations regarding a preventive maintenance standpoint. But you can assume that if those wear out, the rest of them can't be far behind. The scale that builds up on the shaft can flake off and damage the seals, but I'd consider that somewhat unlikely as it would more likely be washed thru the pump before it could do any damage. That being said, bases come with seals included. So if the pump housing were to be damaged, they would be replaced automatically with the new base. I hope this answers your questions. In a nutshell, if you're not getting water in the gearlube, don't worry about it.

Thanks for your advise Willy...I think I will run them again, very small amount of scale, and none of it made it past lower seal. no water in the oil. Happy boating!
