That oil is heading my way apparently, NW Florida, does anyone know what this means for boating? I mean clearly I don't expect to be out there cruising through the sludge, but are the sheens and what we're going to be dealing with for the next few months bad for my hull?

The hull can be cleaned off...... now I would be concerned about the cooling system and that clogging up or having reduced efficiency ......... :(

Re: Oil slicks and gelcoat

Small boat, 16' Cape Horn so yes it's in my driveway right now, but just to clarify my concern isn't so much for when the real sludge shows up cause obviously I won't be out there, but for the coming week of shiny oily water, and once the sludge is gone, the months of oily water to follow. Seems almost like it would be good for the few affected parts of the motor as long as the sludge wasn't present? The concern here is whether the film is going to be bad for my hull and gelcoat because this is obviously something many of us are just going to have to live with for the summer and maybe fall.

It means you won't need to add oil to your 2 cycle engine :D

Ayuh,... I wouldn't worry about it...
Oil will Not harm the hull, or the motor/ drive...
Well,... You might have to change the impeller alittle more often..

I would not go out in it unless you have a cooller on you boat. I you are running a raw water system you could definetly damage parts. I/E your engines ability to cool.

crude is fairly acidic and can cause gel coat blistering if not removed.
and its a pain to remove.
