So my 1998 225hp carb motor started beeping at me about low engine oil yesterday. I feel like I just filled the oil on the motor and the reservoir in the bilge. How much oil shoul my motor be using? I know there is no exact measurement but I think I put a gallon in and have taken somewhere near 60miles. Mostly wot trying to test the "new to me" motor.

Re: Oil usage

You don't measure oil consumption on a two stroke by "miles". It is measured (roughly) by the gallons of fuel consumed. The motor at wide open throttle will consume about a pint in every 6 gallons of fuel. Therefore, one gallon of oil = 8 pints or 48 gallons of gas. (2 pints = 1 quart, 4 quarts = 1 gallon). Do the math. How much fuel have you used.

Re: Oil usage

I have the side of my oil tank marked with a ounce gauge. This way I can calculate and monitor the motor's oil ratio.

I thought maybe the motor was not getting enough oil so I increased it by adjusting the oil injection pump linkage. When passengers began complaining of fumes I devised the oil tank gauge method. With it I was able to confirm that not only was I rich on oil but that the factory marks on the oil pump were correct after all.

Re: Oil usage

I have a 2001 Merc 150 Saltwater that has just started beeping (oil) when I go thru large wakes.
How do you adjust the oil pump on this model?

Thanks

Re: Oil usage

Hey all you newbies. Do a search on the oil alarm, or oil alert. There's a whole lot more to it than just low oil level, and it's been dealt with about a gazillion times.
