need a hand before i go nuts. a little history i bought a bass boat as a project and thats going fairly well. the engine is a evinrude 1984 3 cylinder 70 hp e70elcrd. when i got the boat the seller ( a good friend ) said that the old lower unit had to be replaced after they reved the engine while out of the water then engaged reverse blowing the gears out of the side of the housing. well the lower they sourced fitted but its not a 1984 which i found out when i replaced the water pump and found its keyed and not wedged so i think it came of a 1978 or there abouts. so i replaced the water pump kit as the one on the unit was melted and rebuilt the carbs etc. my friend had replaced the oil in the lower unit before he sold it to me.
ok i put ears on it today and to my surprise it only took half a turn before it started and ran smooth. water jetted out of the tell-tale and everything looked good so i disconnected the gas line and allowed it to run out the gas.
about a hour later i noticed a small puddle of oil/water that had leaked from between the prop and the lower. the oil smells of gas not the smell of gear oil. i pulled the prop expecting to see a oil leak from the front seal but its clean the exhaust bottom is full of water and oil mixed. im kinda new to boats but im sure that water isnt meant to be in this area when its on ears. i have looked at forum posts and manuals and im unsure where to look for the problem or if its a problem. i dont seem to be missing any gear oil and its supper clean but then the short run time and a little oil mixed with water does look make a large mess. im thinking either the exhaust gasket between the lower and the middle didnt seal allowing water to mix with the unburnt oil or the o ring in the back of the lower is gone but that doesnt account for the water or somewhere on the power head i have water getting in the exhaust...... so where should i start ?
