I see once in awhile, actually more often than not, people saying. "I tried 'X' oil and 'Y' oil and I couldnt tell much difference. Engine sounded the same, about the same amount of smoke and no change in performance etc.

Short term isnt the way to test an oil, and quite frankly without 100's of hours, you are not going to see any major difference in any oils,

So, use a high quality oil of the manufactures recommendation and go boating and dont lose sleep over the oil you are using.

Re: Oils, I cant tell the difference!!!

So, are there any other oils out there, other than the ones that the outboard manufactures say to buy, that are any good? Could you recommend a few that you can purchace in the discount or marine stores, perhaps say, when on the road or water and there are no dealers nearby, that would be of good enough quality to run? Sometimes when on visiting my favorite lake, I tend to not bring enough oil along for the trip(Sometimes days) and want to maintain the integrity of my motor.....

First Choice ... the motor manufacturer's reccomended stuff.
Second Choice ... another motor competitor's equivalent.
Third Choice ... major oil company products.
Last Resort ... everything else.

It all depends on what you're running. An older outboard? Anything available now is better than what was available back then. A direct injected? Better stick like glue with the motor manufacturer's stuff. Most modern conventional 2-strokes, see the chart above.

So what does the manufactuer of Evinrudes recommend? I mean for a 91' 70 HP engine. Is XD30 enough, or XD50 blend? Maybe XD100 synthetic is better. I'm at a loss on this oil dilemma. I don't see the recommendation anywhere.

Awl is awl, man. If it is TC-W3 it is better than the manufacturers require and your engine can't tell the difference. . . only your pocketbook.

Been boating 55 years usually use the least expensive properly rated oil.Sometimes name brand
sometimes not.Circa 52 14 Evinrude driven hard till 61,61 18 Evinrude driven hard till 67,67 40 Evinrude driven hard till 87,87 50 Evinrude driven medium hard still on duty.Only changed motors because of an upgrade in boats.None ever decarbed, all used from April to December in the northeast.Always given only minimum maintenance.Never any repairs related to quality of oil.

Crimp, then solder!!

Then seal in adhesive shrink tubing.

Just tore out a cable where a crimped connection got salt in it. . . and opened.

Don't mix your oils ob!!!! Corn oil ONLY for popping!!

I use SPF50 Sunblock by Banana Boat when it's real sunny. I wonder if I should be using a synthetic GTX Turbo formulation in case of high winds?

I use a hot air dry popper. No oil. Then I pour melted butter on it after it is popped. (YUM)!

Just tore out a cable...
Heresy! :)

What I want to know is what made modern outboards so darn oil sensitive compared to my old ones. They ran 40 years on a mixture of crankcase drain oil and stale bacon grease. :D

Well it has been a while so I guess it was about time for someone to attempt an "oil thread"
