I changed my plugs on 1973 85hp Johnson last year. After having som hesitation problems I checked the plugs and I have a black oily residue on all my plugs. Is that normal? Its not a lot and its only around the threads and on the electrodes (I think its called).

Big He,

I wouldn't worry too much about it. You should be running a 50:1 ratio. That equates to:

1 pint of a good TCW-3 rated oil to 6 gallons of 87 octane fuel. You do not need premium.

How bout cleaning out those carburators?Drain'em and see if there's anything coming out that should'nt be. Install a inline fuel filter to prevent same again.
