94 merc 115, steering cable is still stuck in the tilt tube I've tried aero kroil I've soaked it, I've tried heating it with a propane torch, I've beat on it till I'm blue in the face. Dealer can't even look at it for three more weeks Sat around the house for memorial weekend. no fishing makes for a very grumpy
Boater

with the cable nut loosened all the way, the cable retracts about 8-10" should I just cut it and try to drive from the starboard side out the port with a drift and a deadblow?

Well, since it sounds like your going to have to replace the cable and maybe the tilt tube too, do whatever it takes...

Re: OK ......... at my witts End

Murx, I fixed a problem like this last Friday. it sounds like the steel tilt tube has corroded enough to grab the stainless steel outer steering cable sheath. I was able to put a pipe wrench onto the outer sheath and move it back and forth. At the same time, I sprayed liquid wrench onto the end of the tilt tube. Then, while rocking the tube back and forth with the pipe wrench, have someone(with strength) turn the wheel to the right and left. If you can move it with the pipe wrench, you will get it loose. The best thing to do is after it is loose, pull it out of the tilt tube and clean the rust out of the tilt tube, and grease it well.
