My 1969 55hp Chrysler ran fine until I tried to tune it up and adjust the carb, now it runs like crap, misses constantly and won't idle (staller). The service manual is pretty vaugue and it doesn't have a photo of the motor with arrows on everything so I have no idea what I'm even adjusting anymore.

Sorry about all the complaining but I got myself stranded and had to use the trolling motor to get back last time that I went out :/

So anyway, the point is I'm going to have to give up on fixing it myself and locate someone in Topeka or nearby that can fix it for me. Unless someone posibly has this picture with the arrows that will save me :)

thanks in advance!

Matt...

Do you have magneto ignition (without alternator) or battery and coil ignition (with alternator)?

Don't give up yet. Tell us what you have and we can possibly supply some suggestions.

OR: Go over to The Chrysler Crew. Yow will be able to get help there too.

Thanks Frank, I have two coils on the motor so I believe its the second one, it's a 5591 model number and cowl says "Magnapower".

Also if it helps, I bought the 20 pole tach and it doesn't work so I must have the one that just doesn't have tach capability.

Yep, That's battery and coil ignition with an alternator.

The points under the flywheel need to be set to .020 gap at the high point of the cam. If the cam has an arrow on it, the cam needs to be on the crankshaft with the arrow up, that is, you need to be able to see the arrow. The crankshaft nut needs to be tightened to 95 foot pounds to prevent kicking and breaking the key. If the key breaks, the cam will no longer be synchronized with the flywheel and the engine will run crappy if it starts at all.

If you replaced the condensers, put the old ones back in. The failure rate for new condensers is higher that the failure rate for old ones.

make sure that no wires are grounding or frayed.

Should the large cracks in the coils concern me?

I don't suppose there's any way you could highlight those things I need to adjust :) ?

Frank,

His pictures has only one carb, I though MAG ignitions have 2 carbs? If I'm correct maybe his COW is not original to the motor. I know it has nothing to do with the problem, just wondering.

Re: Ok, guess I'll give up...

Chrysler used the magna-power term quite loosely. That is the old style 55 and only had one carb. It was the top horsepower engine in the 35, 45, 50, 55 horsepower series. It came with magneto ignition OR battery and coil ignition which may or may not have been termed Magna-Power. It is also possible that the cover is not the original one.

I didn't notice but I will go back and look: YES large cracks in the coils are a cause for concern and suspicion.

Referencing the first picture:
http://www.comedy104.com/upload/chrysler/100_0359.JPG

The service manual I have doesn't detail what all those screws and adjustments on the tower do, only one adjustment where that arm connects to the carb's throttle control, can someone help me with ID'ing these items and how to adjust them back?

Also it misses every now and then while running.
