I am new to this sterndrive thing and if you have read my other threads, I am having a water leak problem so I am trying to understand how this thing works.

What currently has me confused is the exhaust. I see the exhaust bellows, so I assumed that was where the exhaust comes from the engine down through the outdrive and out the prop. So if that is the case, why do I also see water and hear exhaust coming from either side of the outdrive up closer to the boat.....pics attached.

Thanks again,
wR

Because There are relief ports on the side of the transom assemblyto spew excess water and some exhaust.

Relief passages. It doesn't have to come through the prop, the top holes are another route. Once you are moving the prop creates a vacuum and pulls it out. Without those, trying to reverse the boat would be interesting, exhaust would be forced out the prop and cause lots of ventilation.

The ones at the bottom of the transom are the exhaust relief ports. They let the water out as well as what comes thru the prop. All of it comes from the motors exhaust

ok, so the exhaust from the engine comes around from either exhaust manifold and that connects to something that I assume is rigid which then connects to the exhaust bellows. So in between where the motor exhaust comes from what I assume is what people are calling the Y pipe to where it connects to the bellows is where these relief ports are?

Almost, exhaust manifold, to elbows, to Y pipe, to transom assembly (where the relief ports are) and bellows to bell housing to the outdrive and prop
