I removed the lower unit from my 69' Merc 800 b/c I am going to put a new seal kit on it. One of hte guys at the local boat shops said he'd do it for 90 bucks plus the kit. Her is my question. I want to put a new water pump and housing on. Is this relatively easy, I have a Clymer manual, and, should I replace it before I turn it in to get the seal kit or after I get it back? Also, is there any other maintenence that I can do since I have this thing off? Thanks for the help.

There are seals below the waterpump that will have to be changed anyway. If you plan on taking it in anyway, just get them to install it.

TMD

Thanks. Should I do anything to the drive shaft? Should it be grease before installation?

Prior to reinstalling the gearcase, put a small amount of grease on the splines of the driveshaft.

TMD

Thanks again. I assume that changing the waterpump housing and the water impellor itself is a job a garage mechanic can do? I just want to keep the labor costs as low as possible.

Is there suppose to be a gasket between the lower unit and the rest of the motor? When I took the LU off, there was none.
