Hi experts, I have a 97 Johnson Ficht 150 150FSXECR today went out and without warning the tilt/trim died, no previous coughing or warning. I have OEM and Seloc manuals but before I dive into the bleedin obvious can anyone say yep that's a common one, check this..
cheers

Check ALL conections from the battery to switches and to the tilt motor itself.Make sure they are good and snug and corrosion free. If thats OK take check light or volt meter and see where the voltage stops.....and check ALL fuses.

The selenoid could be bad, you can bypass it to see if the motor will spin...in other words, take some wire and jump from the battery dirctly to the motor.

Was going one minute, not the next. Worse, the manual release is seized so if it is the motor I don't know how I'm going to get to it.

Pull the bottom pin out of the unit and you should be able to raise it up, and then block it in the up position. You may also want to rap the mtr with a small hammer and see what happens.

Thanks guys,
did all you both suggested, problem with motor. It burst into life for a short while tonight then died again. 12 volts coming out of relays, nothing happening down below. I am a little surprised that up and down have failed together, would have thought they were separate windings.
cheers

There are brushes that go bad and is it a 3 wire tilt motor?

It's a two wire and could have a stuck brush.

It's a 3 wire. I removed the pin but couldn't move the engine far enough to access the motor. I'm going to try tapping it until it decides to fire up again.

There are 5 wires going down to the motor on 2 connecters, a 3 pin and a 2 pin, one is for the limit switch I'm guessing 2 wires, that leaves 3 for the motor. I don't know enough about it to say whether it is unusual. (Maybe OMC kept the crappy 3 version for us poor Aussies :) )

You better look closer at mtr itself and see how many wires go into it.
