Hey guys,,,,
I'm at the point on my project to start repairing some Stringers. I cut the tops off my Stringers and I notice I have very Dry wood in most places. I did also notice that around my Fuel tank, the stringers are wet and in a couple of places there are some bad rot.

Question,,,,,,,What would you say is the best why,,,the best wood,,,,and the best glass to cover these "Cross Members"... Also how would you tie the Cross Members into the Stringers.

For the deck,,,,,,I'm soaking 3/4 in ply with Low Vis Epoxy Resin on the bottom and sides and using 1708 and Low Vis Epoxy Resin with Medium Hardner for the decks top.

So if you could please give me some pointers on what to do with these "Cross Members" and Stringers,,,,,,,,,I'l be ready (FINNALLY!!!!!!),,to start installing my new deck.

And as always,,,,thank you to all the iboats gang!!

Re: OK,,,Need some help With My Stringers

I personally would use exterior ply for the stringers and that's what I'm doing. I don't think that the extra cost of marine plywood is worth it. Less voids is cool but I don't think it's worth like 2x (or more) over exterior ply. It does have better glue but your fiberglass job should be good enough to not let in ANY water.

Will want to make sure there isn't anything wet left since epoxy wouldn't bond to it and you'd be locking in moisture to ruin the new stuff :(

I was about to ask about the cross members to but it would seem like a drywall screw or similar would be fine to use. It's being glassed over anyway and will be epoxy-ed in, you just need something to hold it in place for the meantime

F14,,,,

Sounds like you I have the same boat. Mines a 89 Capri Cuddy.
What a "dag gone" job this is!!

One time only for me! I'm using Exterior 3/4 ply.. I ordered my Glass and Epoxy yesterday. I will be off tomorrow and plan to have everything ready for the deck by the end of the day,,,,,I hope! That 1708 is some strong stuff!!

Anyway,,,,,,thanks for the come backs on this question!!!

it's definitely an intensive job but I figure a new 19' Bayliner cuddy is around $24k (MSRP). Until I sink that much into my Capri, I'm still in good shape :D

I haven't used them yet...US Composites will have my stuff here Friday...but I figure 1 1/4'' screws should be fine...I'd prefer that someone more experienced chime in but I don't see a problem. I'd drill a pilot hole first though.

I'd use 1 5/8" "deck screws". They're only slightly more expensive and much more resistant to rusting. Many drywall screws are already "rusty" you just don't see it yet because they're black..

Rust will "grow" on a screw or nail and I've seen the pressure fromt that growth actually pop through the glass.

1 1/4" screws are only going to give you less than 1/2" of bite as the point of the screw tapers about 1/4" before it gets to full diameter.
