Ok not again 2.5L OMC overheating now? what gives?

Replaced and rebuilt the whole upper unit. Then ran in the driveway for about 30 mins with the muffs no problems. Pulled the boat home and had to change the oil so while I was running on muffs I noticed it was overheating.

What gives? What could be the issue. Water is coming in fine, maybe its not traveling out? Anyone got any suggestions ?

Boat is a 1982 Galaxy with a 2.5l I/O stringer sterndrive.

Thanks

On full it is 160 normal I believe on dash too.

On half or minimal pressure it overheats.

Is this a tsat? Everything on the upper has been redone and hasnt gotten even used yet. There is water coming out with exhaust with either full or minimal pressure.
Also I took the 3/4 hose off where water comes in from the sterndrive and noticed while disconnected that no water was coming out.

Please help.. Just wanna get her in the water a few times this summer. Or else I am moving to the east coast and converting her into a sea beast.

so turn the hose on full!

man: "Doctor, it hurts when i do this"

doctor "then don't do that!"

OK LOL I have just checked it again. While on minimal pressure water in fact does come out of the hose to the engine housing, when on full more water comes lol.

So I plan on taking this thing on the water for the first time. Should this be ok? I read alot of places not to turn hose on full because of this or that.

I just want to make sure when I get on the water I dont overheat.

Thanks for the info. Please let me know.

Also if all else fails does a secondary pump to the hose from freshwater sound like a good fix?

Go to hardware store an get some clear rubber hose. Replace the hose for this check, the one that brings cooling water to the thermostat housing and check for air bubbles.
swivel bearing seals might be worn sucking up exhaust gasses causing over heating.

Might try dropping the lower into trash can and filling it with water. with the hose keeping the can full, run the motor to be sure its sucking up water.

I just did this and no water is getting sucked up to engine.

This has to mean something is wrong in the impeller section of the sterndrive, which means take it all appart again and do it again.

Anyone got any clues as to why ? I guess the guy did it wrong?

Not one drop of water comes out the hose that comes from the sterndrive.

Guess I found the problem. Sucks to redo something again and again and again, :(

a stringer drive cannot be submerged in a pail.

a swimming pool maybe.

hose on half, bucket of water....you trying to wreck the impeller?

Ok sir. I have had the hose on full and no overheating.

I have had the stringer in a 100 gallon container so big that the stringer was sitting in the water up to and past the water vents where the muffs hook up and no water come out the hose to the themostat housing .

Should I take appart and double check the stringer?

Should I just get a pump and drive water to the engine myself therefore bypassing the impeller (or taking it out all together)

Should I wait and hear your response because your intelligence is higher then mine is by far.

Or if submerged in a tub of water as I described and I am not getting any kind of water in the motor what else could it be? I am begging to think maybe the impeller is on backwards. I dunno yet but would like to hear your advice before I redo a job I did already.
