As most of you know i am running a 1952 johnson sea horse QD-12 10 hp,
i replaced the coils, points and condencers and of course the spark plugs.

the only issue i have with it now is i get the fuel mix right to idle nicley. i put it in drive and give it some gas open the throttle just over half way and the motor wants to stall back off the throttle and it will run fine. well playing around today i found that i had to change the fuel mix to alot richer and the motor would plane out very nicley i ajusted the hi speed to where it wanted to run best and backed it off a 8th of a turn and it would run fine but no plane out untill i ajusted the fuel mix on the low speed. My question is this a common problem?

I know i probably need to clean the carb out, im going to rebiuld it in the fall or winter is there a way i can run the motor as is and keep the fuel mix rich or do i need to rebiuld the carb sooner? i would like to wait and make it my winter project but there is alot of fish out there to catch. when i have the fuel mix on the leaner side where it idles nice when i try and turn in gear about 1/4 throttle it tries to stall as well.

When the motor is planed out and i get some weight in the bow to keep it down the boat does about 10-20 miles an hour so the motor is a complete workhorse.

Re: ok question i cant figure out..

Sounds to me like the intermediate fuel circuit in the carb is not doing its part, Link, leaving the low and high speed circuits to try to make up for it.

Clean the carb, give special attention to the row of small orifices that are in the carb throat.

Good luck. :)

Sounds like the low speed and hi speed needles and ports are working. You may want to be sure the link/sync is right. Just look when the cam roller hits the timing cam to initiate throttle butterfly opening as you increase the throttle. There should be a line on the timing cam, and that's where you need the cam roller to first hit the timing cam when throttling up. I know there's a sticky in this forum that'll explain it better, but just see if it's right at this point. Good Luck!
