So I haven't had a boat since the 70s. Laugh all you want. I bought this little john boat with a 25hp Mercury Force motor. Its got a trolling motor and two batteries. Its on a single axle trailer, has leaf springs. No data plate on the trailer. The hubs have grease zerts in them. So I'm thinking my first steps are, replace all of the fuel lines and such, they look kinda dry rotted. I'll replace the fuel tank too. I don't know yet if the engine runs, i'll get to that. I want to take it out on a trolling motor only lake this week. I need to know, 1: will a standard car battery charger be acceptable to charge deep cycle batterys. 2. How do I check the wheel bearings to insure that they have been maintained? 3. How much and how often should I grease said bearings? There is no data plate on the trailer to indicate manufacturer or lineage. After I make sure that my woman and I arent too fat and sink this boat, I'll get to the motor part. I grew up on the Chesepeake. This is a different world from that.

Welcome aboard cptmarvel,

Pull the carb off the motor and clean up up, you may have to find a kit for it. Walmart sells Berryman carb cleaner in a gallon can. Pull the wheels and then the hubs off the trailer. Clean the old grease out and inspect the bearings for damage. Grease the bearings yearly. A battery charger is a battery charger and will charge a deep cycle battery just fine.

Thanks folks. I've watched a few vids on the bearings. They seem to more deal with the larger trailers. i know the concept is the same, used to have to clean, pack and adjust all kinds of wheel bearings as a mechanic. Just seems different because its such a dinky trailer i guess. I suppose the only way I'm going to find out what kind of bearings it needs is to pull them out and google the brand and stamped part number. The seals may be a different issue.
