Is it ok to run an i/o prop outside of water? (with muffs of course) And if you had a bent prop shaft would it be noticable??

Re: ok to run prop?

OK, but do not rev up the engine. The lower unit is designed to operate with a load on the gears and freewheeling a prop can cause damage. It is ok to engage forward at idle- just be sure nothing is around the prop to catch on it. Do not rev up the engine.

If you suspect a bent prop shaft, you will not be able to tell by looking at the prop- most are not 100% true anyway. Remove the prop from the shaft and used a dial indicator to check the run-out on the prop shaft. In lieu of that, place something near to the shaft but not touching, ( I have vise-gripped a piece of welding rod to the skeg) and bend it so it ALMOST touches the shaft. Rotate the shaft by hand and watch the gap between the wire and the shaft. If the shaft is bent bad enough, you will see the variance. If you bent a prop shaft, you will have dinged up the prop pretty good as well.

UFM82

I had just bought this boat and it had a new prop on it so I can't rely on the dinged prop. Will a bent shaft give a vibration at all rpm ranges? It seems like it only vibrates at 2200 to 2500 rpm.
