If I close the sea **** and connect a hose to the raw water flushing valve and put the other end in a replenishing barrel of water,
Do I run the risk of adverse effects to the Duo prop drive because i am not drawing water up through it?
My reasoning for doing this is that I have 2 pairs of muffs neither of which fit very well on the Duo prop.
So the end of a 1" hose in a full barrel seems a better proposition than a hose pipe connected to the muffs squirting water all over the shire.

Doesn't the Volvo have the raw water pump on the engine driven by a belt? If you're suggesting hooking directly up to that, then I'd say it's fine. Bottom line, you always want water running through the raw water impeller when it's spinning or else the rubber impeller will burn up and disintegrate. As you've written up your question, I'm not sure exactly where the water is entering the picture. If it's before the impeller, find. If not, don't do it that way.

Would have to know how your raw water flushing valve is hooked into the system, and where the seacock is located to answer with any kind of accuracy.

No, running without a load a low rpm will not hurt anything.

Thank you for your reply

Raw water intake from transom plate then to sea ****, then to flushing valve, then to Vetus filter, then to impeller pump driven by engine, then to heat exchanger,

You can hook the garden hose directly to the flush valve if you want to, and not even worry about the seacock. Once you start it, all the water will be pulled into the pump, and with the seacock open, if you speed the engine up it won't collapse the garden hose. If you try to use the tube and one inch hose, you must make sure there are no air leaks or it will not draw water up to the pump. Even then, assuming this tub of water is on the ground, that is a long pull up over the side of the boat to get the water to the pump.
