OK trusty iBoaters My 88spl johnson cyl 1&3 running 170-175 hot 2&4 norm 148. whatsup

came back from fishing just now and as part of normal flushing/checking put IR thermometer on all cyl. they used to all run 148 degrees. Right this very moment it is running with cyl1 170 cyl2 175. Not going higher and no leaks. Pulling plugs now but what is causing this? Seems to be running normally.
Thanks for any input....out to pull plugs

How old is the water pump impeller?

If you don't know for sure, then its a good idea to replace. Did you check your thermostat?

I just had to shut it down....1&3 hit 185 deg!
Thermostat could be issue cuz 2&4 are staying at 148 deg.
what is a good way to check. I have a manual but it is not very specific on that.

After doing the water pump and the thermos if it still overheats you may want to pull the head on the hot side and check the water deflectors in the block.

This friggin SELOC manual refers to every engine but 88 spl on cooling sys. Water pump I can handle when I can get kit. Thermos are new to me.

this 88 spl (90 no oil) does not have thermos in normal place. I think I found them at bottom center of heads. In process of pulling whatever it is...water flows to it anyway lol.
anyone let me know if you are familiar with this engine and can say for shure where and how to test thermos.
thanks again

ok, in between digging in motor and eating pan seared speckled trout,
I found and removed thermos. One had a piece of trash in spring but seems like it would have held it open not closed. Nevertheless they are now clean and have to wait on gaskets to replace.
I hope thats it.
Thanks for help

I would leave them out just to run it one time to see if it's still getting hot. If nothing else swap them and see if the opposite side gets hot, instead. If so, then you'll know that you have a thermostat issue. Also, if you found a piece of trash stuck in it, then you may possibly have another piece of trash plugging up a water passage.

Worse case scenario, is you'll need to pull the powerhead and make sure the passages are all clear. Not expensive, but just a little time consuming.

OK I have to agree not to run w/o therms. My "hot" bank now runs normal 148deg but 2&4 now run 20 deg cooler at 125deg. This alone can't be good. Housing is a bear to get on and off (at bottom of heads and almost have to remove bottom cover).
Have to wait to get gaskets and prob new therms although they seem ok.

Okay, it sounds like you may have a blockage to the hot bank. Water may be getting through, but not enough.

I don't know if you said you replaced the stats or just swapped them. Best to just replace them. They are not that expensive, considering the time it takes to get that housing apart and back together. Since you still have some temp variation (not a normal situation) you should consider pulling both head covers-not the heads, but the covers. Visually inspect inside for any blockage/debris, such as sand or weeds. What you find inside these head covers you will probably find inside the block.. That 88 is the same engine as a 90, but without a: VRO pump, had a rectifier only and the power trim was optional.

emdsapmgr ,
I left them out when I got the variation in temp between 2 banks. I'll pull the head covers now to see what that looks like. I was afraid to because I wanted to use boat and dont know if I can get parts in time. But now I need thermo housing gaskets anyway so I am...pulling head covers, pulling lower unit (which I can't get seperated yet), changing water pump impeller, and all gaskets.
Did I leave anything out???????

Water deflectors in the block, especially on the hot side??
