Old 115 all wires have insulation falling off

Some of the old Mercury (Tower of power) wiring harnesses were bad about the insulation getting brittle & falling off, Mercury realized this & fixed it, Does anyone know what year this problem was corrected. My buddy's ( Mid 70"s ) 115 if we look at the wires, the insulation just falls off.

hard to tell when...the mid 80's is decent but wait another 10 years and will know

common problem on old mercs. time for a new harness.

Most elastomers have a 20 year life expectancy. your talking about a motor that is almost 50 years old.

I believe the insulation changed in the mid 80's

Just by seeing the thread title - It has to be a Merc. LOL

CDI makes replacement harnesses, both for under the cowl and the boat-side between the motor and remote control. If they can't be repaired, that's you only option.

A word of advice - Don't buy NOS or used harnesses. They are just as old too and even if they look good, they will fall apart in no time.
