My neighbor picked up a 1969 Mark Twain 20' boat for free with the 220HP inline 6 GM engine and a Kiekhaefer outdrive. This outdrive is massive! It also says Mercury and Mercruiser on the drive and looks pretty similar to what I've seen.

A couple of questions... are the U-joint bellows and shift cable bellows the same as current Alpha 1 bellows because they look similar. Also is the gimbal bearing the same?

It definitely looks like the bellows need to be replaced and I was thinking the gimbal bearing should be due after 30 years. The engine only has 360 real hours on it, and most of those are idling hours. The previous owner had it since new. We are also putting electronic ignition in it.

Also, how the heck do you remove the outdrive??? There are no bolts that are visible like the six bolt setup on Alpha drives.

Thanks.

Befor investing much money in that Mercrusier II you shoud know there are no O/D parts available for it the drives were built for barge use the is a release for the uint on the inside of the gimbal ring. Take care it weighs as much as a VW :D

The drive seems solid. It sure looks like it weighs a ton. Are the bellows the same as Mercruiser? When you say there is a release on the inside of the gimbal ring, do you mean inside of the ring accessed from the outside of the transom, or inside of the transom? What does the release look like? Do you need a tool to release it? Is the drive called a Mercruiser II?

Thanks again.

Men, I know this post was years ago but if Anyone has a 1968 or 1969 Mark Twain with the 292 inline 6 with the Model II outdrive and want to sell, let me know.

I currently own 3 1969 Mark Twain's as mentioned above. I'm out to collect as Many as I can just because they are Great Boats.
