Does anyone know the steps to take to change the water pump impeller?
Do I need it in Forward gear and how to unhook the shifter.

Thanks Mike

Re: Old 6 hp evinrude change water pump

What year ? /model number?

My 84 6hp just unbolt and drop off. Shift rod pulls from mechanical gubbins at the top.

Only prob is that I have to remember to take it all off complete with the 5" extension, then remove that after cleaning up the drive shaft, because the shaft wont pull through a bush in the extension until it is clean. Failure to remember this results in the pump impeller key smashing the water pump housing!

Sorry the picture did not appear for me. As TD says!!

shift to reverse, remove the 4 bolts holding the lower, it will slip down about 3/4 inch, you have to disconnect shift linkage in the space between lower and leg. notice the notch in the shift rod, the bolt has to go back thru the notch.

As tashasdaddy said. Except there is more to it than that. Before you begin, remove the spark plugs. Then as you are dropping the lower unit down, slowly rotate the flywheel. There is a pin through the top end of the drive shaft that has to come down through a slot--the reason for rotating the flywheel is to align the pin with the slot. Once you get it aligned and the lower unit removed, note the position of the pin so you can put it back the same way before reinstalling the lower unit. And Don't rotate the flywheel with the lower unit removed!

Note: you do not have to remove the pin from the shaft to get the pump off. Merely pull the shaft out of the lower unit, along with the pump housing. Don't worry, it WILL go back in with no problem
