old 6 volt starter

1956-30hp johnson has the old 6 volt starter. Will I burn up this starter using a 12 volt battery?

Not if you use it only briefly. I used to start my 1937 Chevy stock car with a 12V battery.

If your outboard is in good running condition, it should start almost instantly, cold or warm, so you won't hurt the starter. Just don't grind away at it. If you have to do that, you need to figure out what's wrong. Those Big Twins should start almost the instant you hit the starter.
