I have a 1967 John. 60 Hp, Mech Shift.
I have not opened up the gear case yet, but plan to in order replace the clutch dog. I am wondering about interchange the gears. My book describes the Heavy Duty gear case as having interchagable gears. I have the standard gear case though, and the gears are never mentioned as being swapable. Has anyone successfully switched these two gears? OR can anyone tell me what the differenece is between the F & R gear?

Thanks, Tom

You might try looking on one of the outboard parts WEB sites to see if they list the same part number for both gears. If they do it’s a pretty good bet they are interchangeable.

Thanks for the response. They do have different part numbers. From what I have learned, the Reverse has two teeth to engage the clutch dog, and I think the Forward has more. At least this is what I picked up from reading through old Posts. I have not learned the if anyone has swapped them though. - Tom
