I have a chrysler 7.5 hp (around 1975) that quit working. I was looking at a Johnson 6.0 hp (2003) 2 stroke for my Catalina 22. Will the new engine have about the same hp output? or torque? I guess the bottom line question is will it be strong enough to push the boat? Thanks to anyone who can help.

Re: Old 7.5 hp vs new 6.0 hp

I don't know anything about Chrysler outboards, but the 6hp will push a 22' sailboat. If the Chrysler is head rated then the hp difference isn't likely to be much different.

I have a 1955 7.5 hp Evinrude that came off of a 23' sailboat. It worked great and probably outputs less than 7 hp at the prop. Personally, I think it has the power of a modern 6hp, but I don't have anything to back that up.

An "oil injected" 4 stroke? Please explain, daddy.

Seaclusion, I think you will be happier with the JohnnyRude than you were with the Chrysler. It is a wonderful little engine.

Thanks for the quick help. I think I will go with the 6 hp. Now to find one at a decent price.

The later Johnny 6.0hp 2 stroke is a very strong engine for a 6hp. It shares a lot with the 8hp engine. (Intake system is different, no you can't change it. :) )

That's really the ideal engine for your boat.

I just want to make sure I have this right. Honda had a 2-stroke 6 hp with some kind of oil reserve?

Make sure you get "work" prop for that 6. It will work better.

The "work" prop is a three blade.

yep honda had a 6hp, said oil injected on the cowl, had a 1 pint container under the cowl, for the oil. and also had at small alternator, to service the batteries on the sail boat. it was a special sail boat model. it was the 1st honda i had ever seen.

I think all the modern props for the 6hp are three bladed, but DWJ makes a good point. The "standard" or commonly issued prop is 9" pitch while the one intended for sail boats is 6.5".
