old 9.8 merc will not keep runing serial 1529501

ok so this old merc 9.8 white motor was basicly given to me . it had been serviced last wither and use this spring and it quit on previous operator . He bought a new motor I got the old.

it runs not to bad but you have to keep weight on the prime bulb to keep it running . I bought a new fuel pump kit for it and installed it but that hasn't helped.
I took carb off and blew it out but it already looked clean.

looking for pointer/ideas to attack

are the large grey connectors from the fuel line to motor known issues ????

That is an over worked fuel pump as designed for a 9.8 in my opinion. So good you replaced the diaphram and gaskets. The other issue could be the check valves which you will find behind each fuel fitting, the one into the pump and the one out of the pump. One opens in one direction to let fuel in and the other opens in one direction to let fuel out. If either are allowing fuel past in the wrong direction it will be a no go. I think the check valves for them or NLA so you will have to see if you can clean them up to function properly.

Othwerwise, you have a great little motor there. I have a 1962 and really enjoy it. Lightweight, compact and decent power and speed. Get a 212 lb Duranautic Aluminum boat up on plain with me and my Dog no problem, about 16mph on the GPS.

is very much issue with the grey metal unit on the end of the fuel hose mine seems a bit sloppy and wondered if it might be sucking air

Not really. i wouldn't dismiss the idea but, I'd discount it
