Hi all,

Ran into a bit of a issue today trying to get this boat my dad gave to me legal. I can't find a hin number to give the DMV to get a registration. The only numbers where the hin should be is 11404 which is a serial number and not remotely close to the correct format for a HIN. The Boat is a MFG Cartop fisherman 12', they were made from 1964-72, only in their final year was the hin even invented. According further reading because it don't have a live well it's 1968 or older so it theoretically shouldn't have a HIN. Here in Michigan boats with out a permanent motor and that are under 20' don't need a title, the lack of a title wouldn't be a big deal if it had a hin. My dad bought it sometime in the late 80's or early 90's (tags expired 1992) from a elderly man who (as far as he can remember) died a few months later and never gave him paperwork on the boat and my dad doesnt remember the old mans name and if there was a bill of sale it has long been lost so the boat was stuffed away and forgotten. Basically I want to get this old fiberglass gal going again but I don't know if I can since there's no paperwork, hin, bill of sale or title and the last registered owner has been dead for a quarter of a century or more. Basically what I'm asking with the given info above is with a bill of sale from my dad to me and the MC number on the bow can I get tags for this damn thing?! Any help would be great.

Regards

It sound like you already have all the question you will need to ask when you go down to the DMV. :)

Every state is different.... but down here in a situation like yours the scdnr makes you do a affidavit in support ( think thats the correct term ) anyway you take pictures, fill out some paper work run a ad in the paper for 3 issues then after 30 days if no legitamate claim is made the dnr will issue a title and if it old prior to hull id issue a hull id.

Welcome to iboats.

If it is a Pre-1974 then there was NOT a HIN requirement by the USCG in use. Serial numbers (If any) were used. Some people actually used their telephone number back then.

I would be checking with the sec of state here in MI, my 19 Spectrum doesn't have a title and its got a live well and a merc 90. It does have a registration in lieu of title. I think with the MC # and a bill of sale you might be god to go. I know the Sec of State will tell you what you need, but I think you should be able to get it done. Just might need to jump through a couple extra steps worse case. Please report back, I have another boat that needs title from the early 60's with no tittle.

If you don't have a motor on it you don't even need to worry about it. Throw a couple of oars on it and enjoy.
SOS - Watercraft
Watercraft exempt from registration are:
  • Those 16 feet or shorter, propelled by oars or paddles, and not used for rental or commercial purposes;

Well I'm heading to the Secretary of State here in a few, for those in Michigan the form they gave me is the TR-205, you can print it off at home if you have to. I'll let everyone know how it went.

Well I got it registered and titled based upon the fact the boat has no HIN and it got it's mc number so long ago it's a number or two short so basically what they did is created a new title and registration for it since nothing existed in their files on it. Before today in the eyes of the state that boat did not exist. Not sure if this will help the guy asking how mine went for his title less boat but I'm officially a proud owner of a 1964 MFG Cartop fisherman.

EDIT:

The technical term for what they did is a renewal transfer, maybe that will help some one looking at this for awnsers in the future.

Wonderful.

Are you going to car top it, or use a trailer?

It seems todays cars are not designed very well for cartopping a boat.

Sadly the trailer that it came with was cannibalized for something else since my dad gave up on getting it legal before I was even born, so likey it's going to the lake in a pickup truck haha. Going to pick up a little evinrude two horse for it tommarow and going to get her painted up. Hoping she will be on the water this weekend, I'll be sure to post pictures if I figure out how to from my phone. From my understanding there aren't many of these old diddies left after 50 years.
