Im so dumb when it comes to outboards just started messin with them.. and I have an old 1963 evinrude 5.5.. Had no fire.. replaced the coils.. BIG blue spark now.. so thats solved.. next thing is the carb.. I pull the choke.. First pull on the motor it pops one time Really loud and wont start.. and every pull after that it wont pop loud anymore.. wait about 15 min or so walk back out to my shop.. pull it and it pops then thats it for another 10 min. or so.. I release the choke and fuel pours out the intake on the end of the carb.. so its flooding.. What causes this.. i Know the choke will but not in 3 or 4 pulls right? help.. would a carb kit solve this whole problem?

Re: Old carb help

the float and needle are right bc when i turn it upside down and blow no air gets through and when its upright air flows.. but is it possible that something else is wrong that would make it flood so fast? I cleaned the carb but didnt replace anything.. maybe i didnt do a good job.. is it possible that fuel is not geting to the pistons??... I'll just buy a carb kit without the float bc this one seems to be in really good shape and working..I just wanna know that this carb is my problem before i spend money on it and then find out it was fine and something else wasnt working..

The plugs look good and im pretty sure the plug wires arent crossed.. I mean is it normal for me to choke the motor and pull it 3 times and then to turn the choke off and fuel to flow out of the carb? whats that sound like to you.. When I cleaned it i took out the low speed and high speed needles that you turn but I didnt remove any jets or anything? and what does a carb kit come with?

Re: Old carb help

the kits vary. some come with gaskets, needle, and float..... others do not have a float.

if you have the old cork style float you need to get a new one.

if you didnt take the whole carb apart there is your problem........ also note just because it looks clean doesnt mean it is.

check out the carb cleaning instructions in the frequently asked questions........ rebuilding the carb only requires basic skills and only a few tools.

also in the frequently asked questions forum there is a carb adjustment thread.

you may have some fuel come out after it has been choked and not started but not a whole whole bunch.

also the carbs do not need to open until you have a small amount of timing advance....... im not familiar with your eng but you should have a mark on the timing advance arm that the carb link will line up with..... the roller will be on that mark and just barely be opening the carbs with the handle in the throttle in the start position

Yea when i open to the start postion the carb is just beginning to open some... its so confusing I just took it apart again.. the gasket between the carb and block is kinda shabby lookin could this cause an air leak and cause this to happen.. Its blowing my mind.. im not the type to give up tho.

Re: Old carb help

yes if that gasket is bad it could have ill effects.

your carb works off the venturi principals. the eng sucks air in which in turn sucks fuel up through jets... which meter the amount of gas allowed in the eng.

reduced air flow means less fuel.

when you choke it the eng sucks more raw fuel into the eng allowing it to start easier......... same thing as if you squirted it in manually.

here is link that will help you http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31&order=desc it has cleaning instructons and adjustments also.

How far open do you have those needles? Sounds like probably way too far. 3/4 turn on the high speed and 1 1/2 on the slow is more than enough. Also, is the motor sitting level?

Does the fuel run out when priming with the squeezer bulb, or just when you crank it? And how much runs out? So many unanswered questions.

The purpose of the choke is to supply extra fuel for starting. So it is not surprising that there will be a bit in there after you choke it. If the high speed needle is open way too far, there will be a lot in there. And if tilted, it will run back out at 'ya.

The pistons are "sucking air". Otherwise, the choke wouldn't do anything without the partial vacuum created by the "sucking".

Sounds like you need to spend some time with Dad. He'll enjoy it.

Yea the motor is tilted at me a bit.. its on a saw horse.. and when fuel runs out its a table sppoon or so.. is it possible that the tilt is running the fuel back out at me rather than sucking it to the pistons? and yea my dad is about as smart with these things as I am but he has helped lol. its my dads dad thats the outboard guru lol

Even tilted, a tablespoon would be an awful lot. But straighten it up and pre-adjust the needles like I said.

Re: Old carb help

By the way, just as a note, Dad's LOVE to get calls for help on things like this. I am 45 and fotunate enough to have a healthy dad that lives nearby.

Every now and then, we get together and work on an old outboard. It is really great, and I know he loves it. I am pretty good at working on them, but he knows more than I ever will.

To me, that is more important than the motor, getting to spend time with him on something we both enjoy.

Good luck with it, it sounds like you have the needles open too far like FR says. readjust them and post back the results. Also, as hard as it is to beleive, it is really, really easy to get the spark plug wires crossed. I keep blaming the guy who had it before me. It seems to help.

Started trouble shooting my fuel system bored today.. unplugged the hose from the fuel filter that comes from the pump.. pump was pumpin fuel.. hooked it all back up and unplugged it from the carb to see if fuel was getting through it and it wasnt the fuel filter was plugged up.. bypassed it with an inline fuel filter we use for our race kart..
