Im having trouble taking apart what I believe to be an Elgin 2.5 HP. The problem is in the gear case but I can't get at it. The gear case housing is jammed and from the top the leg of the motor will not separate from the lower gear case section. I know that on some of these motors there was a cap that could be removed to get at a screw but on this one there is no cap. At the bottom of the swivel tube their is a pin but the only way I can think of removing it is by drilling it out as it is flush on both sides of the motor. Any help world be great. Thanks

Mike

Re: Old Elgin

We need a model number to be sure which company built that Elgin. The number may appear on the mounting bracket.Seems I remember some motors having a bolt in the exhaust snout.Speaking generically that pin may be able to be driven out carefully with a hammer and a drift pin. Most likely it is just a tight slip fit but it could be tapered so look carefully to try to determine which way to drive it and don't force it.

The number is unfortuantly obscured but I can make out a 571.???? Im pretty sure its a West Bend but not positive. Both sides of the pin are flat and anchored flat much like the end of a nail. I will perhaps attempt to hammer it out but im not sure it will work.

Re: Old Elgin

It is a West Bend.According to my info the 2.5 was made only in 46.You may want to ask for help at www.aomci.org and look for a after market service manual there and on ebay. You also may want to watch for parts and parts motors on eBay.
