Mid to late 60's evenrude sportwin 9.5 model number is 9522c

Trying to get this thing running. I've rebuilt the entire bottom end. And the electrical system. I get good spark can get it to fire, only one or two "put put" then it quits
The guy I got it from was into the carb and sad to say dosnt seem to know what he was doing.
He supplied me with a carb rebuild kit that wasn't the correct one (or mabey as correct as possable for this old girl)

I can't seem to up load a picture but on the carb there is a tube that runs parallel to the idle adjust valve
Runs along the top of the carb body.
When I pump th he gas bulb I get gas squirt out of this. If I pull it won't fire unless I both choke it and put my thumb over the end of this tube

What is this for? Is there suppose to be something in here that the previous guy removed?

Without having one in my hand to look at, I think you are speaking of the bowl vent. If i'm correct, and gas is squirting out, the float valve is not shutting off the incoming fuel when it is full.

That would make sense. It only had gas come out when I over presureised it with the priming bulb

Neighbour popped over. Had a look. We grabbed his tank (old metal on vs my new plastic)
Second pull it fired up.
I only had a little bit of gas in mine (thought it was enough) so its possable that I didn't have enough gas in it.
But the neighbour said his little 9.9 would not run on a plastic tank. His boss gave him an older metal on and it ran fine.
Any idea why that might be?

Some of the new plastic tanks leave a lot to be desired in the quality department.

It would run on a plastic bucket of gasoline/oil mix if you have a suitable hose and pickup tube. But not advised for obvious reasons.
