I'm thinking I'm going to build a small boat for fishing, the size of which depends totally on this old outboard I've found in my shed. Problem is, besides the fact that it's old, it's blue, it's fairly small, and it's an Evinrude, I know nothing about it or how to identify it. I'm hoping that someone might point me in the right direction. This board might be right where I want to be, but, if it isn't, I don't want to clutter it up..

thanks,
penny

well.. where do I find that..? I know, pretty lame, eh..?

I'm thinking, now, that it's probably a ranger, from pictures I've found. 46, 47ish.. was the 1.1hp the only size it came in..?

Well what ever type of engine it is there should be an ID-plate on it. On my force its on the engine leg..

Just take a look at the engine, and see if you can find it.

alright.. suppose there's no ID plate.. am I out of luck..? I'm not totally a ditz, I know motors.. I've done a fair share of ID/SN number hunting, and I just can't find anything on this one... no stamping, no plates, no cast numbers that I can find.. unless they're hiding somewhere other than the obvious places... I'm not gonna get any help on this am I...? *laughing*

You will get what we can offer, Penny.

Look on the block for what looks like a freeze plug. There should be some numbers on that.

Failing that try the Antique Outboards site.

Sloopy knows a lot about old engines. He should be along soon.

Good luck. :)

thank you much, wannabe and JB.. please, I meant no disrespect.. I know perfectly well that the failing here is in the limited information I have to give y'all, and if it came across as otherwise, the failing is mine alone..

Re: old evinrude id

after cleaning a little bit more, I find the numbers 4407 stamped on the freeze plug.. the serial number is a bit harder to decipher, but I'll get it... the model number is what I really wanted, though, and I appreciate your helping me to find it... and now, just to make sure I know what I need to know, the 4407 is a 1.1 hp ranger made somewhere around 1946 or 47, is this right...?

Re: old evinrude id

ok, last post, I promise... wannabeboater, you were right, there's a perfectly good, and visible, ID plate right on the clamp, and I, with my 20/20 pilot's vision, missed it... *sigh* my son found it, even worse, as I swore none of the males in my family was gonna help me, since they think I'll never get it done...
ANYWAYS, thanks for letting me take up a little bit of your time, you were a huge help, and I hope you don't hold any of this against me when I next have questions..

...penny

Penny, now that your found the year and HP rating, I have a few suggestions.

1. Check compression. Just pulling on the rope, see if it resists you. You may want to spray a little oil in the cylinders first and let it sit for a few hours.

2. Get a repair manual. Copies of the originals are available from The Ken Cook Company.

http://www.kencook.com/kccwww/marinepubs/marinepubs.html

or an aftermarket is available on this site. Click link on lower left hand corner.

3. Put some oil in the cylinders before you try to start it.

4. Try to start it either in the water or on muffs.

5. If it starts great, just make sure it is pumping water. If not, shut it down right away.

6. Replace the water cooling pump (Impeller)

7. Probably need to do a carb rebuild also.

8. Change the lower unit oil/grease. That unit may take lubriplate grease.

Another place for good information is The Anitque Outboard Motor Club ask a member board.
http://www.aomci.org
