Re: Old Evinrude info.
Hi U2B,
Perhaps we can narrow it down a little bit for you. From 1950 to 1953 the 7.5hp Fleetwins had a neutral clutch arrangement on top of the gas tank on the starboard side (looking forward), would spin 180-degrees for reverse, and had a sliding lever in the front for throttle. From 1954 to 1958 they were a full gearshift motor with a twist grip throttle. 1954 and 1955 models had an exhaust relief cover on the rear of the motor leg held on by three small screws. The 1956-1958 models lacked this cover and were fairly smooth at the rear of the motor leg with a thumb-sized exit hole mid-way down.
A '54 cowling will have screws holding the cowling on on the shift handle side. The '55 onwards cowlings have no screws holding them on. '53 and prior cowlings are all held on with screws.
The model and serial number ought to be found on either a tag on the clamp brackets or on a nickel sized plug on the motor block itself.
Hope that helps.
- Scott
