i have an old 1950's evinrude sportwin. I can get it to fire, but whatever I do I cannot get it to run for more than a couple of minutes. Someone told me that a leaf valve in the carburetor isn't workin properly. If this is true how can i fix it? What would the fuel ratio be 24:1? If anyone can help. I would really appreciate it. The evinrude is a 1953 I think. Its model number is 4233. If anyone has any ideas on how i can make it run I would gladly hear them. Thank you

i would start with the carb thats for sure might need to rebuild it or maybe just clean it out also check the fuel pump if it has 1

It could be the carb, the fuel lines or the fuel pump. The old ones have a large diaphram fuel pump on the right side of the crank case. The diaphrams dont last forever. I had to replace my 1963 cause it was all cracked. You could be leaking air through bad fuel lines or the carb needs to be clean and have new kit installed. Make sure you are using fresh pulgs gapped correctly. I just tore apart mine today 1963 10hp I found a crack in the block and a broken connecting rod...............so I have plenty of used parts if you need them. you can probably answer a lot of questions at this page.
http://1958evinrude10hp.0catch.com/EvinrudeSpecs.htm

JT
reconotdor@aol.com

Model 4423 was made from 1947 to 1951, Alex (a guess on the name).

Correct fuel mix is 24:1. I think it is very similar to the Johnson HD series of 2.5hp engines that shared the model run.

It may not have a fuel pump. It may have a pressurized tank with the two hose fuel line. If so, your problem is almost sure to be that the tank is not pressurizing and doesn't feed fuel after your initial priming. See what happens if you keep pumping the priming button on the tank.

Let us know, and we can help you nail it down.

Good luck. :)

ok, thanks for telling me that, but it might be the float, how would I correctly set the float?
And how does the tank get pressurized. There is no fuel pump on the engine, Where would i be able to find maybe another complete carburetor or a rebuild kit for the Evinrude Sportwin 3.3 hp model 4423 engine?

The tank is pressurised by air from the crankcase being fed down one of the two hoses (you do have a two line fuel hose don't you?).
Any OMC dealer should be able to supply a carb rebuild kit, and it's very easy to do. I understand if you get the original OMC kit, rather than an aftermarket one like Sierra, you get a replacement float with it so you shouldn't need to do much adjustment. I've read here that the old lacquered cork floats can be affected by additives in modern gas, the lacquer is dissolved and the float sinks!
The rebuild kit comes with full instructions which show how to make all the adjustments.
If the problem is with the tank you can get a rebuild kit for that too.

some of those old motors have a crushed foil fuel filter, had a similar problem with a 10 hp sporttwin 57. filter was cloged, replaced filter and zoom. main symptom was we had to keep pumping the pressure button on the tank to keep it running

Hi! First post here on the board, reviving a REALLY old thread ;) I've seen on a couple different boards now, the fuel/oil ratio for this engine is 24:1. My engine has got a label on the gas lid that says 30:1? Also, the first time run to use 1/3pt oil to 1gal gas the first four hours running time.

I just got this motor last weekend, hoping to have it running by 3-9 when we go on vacation. I've drafted my bro for help ;)
