A friend of mine has offered me a great deal, I THINK. He has offered me an old 1975 7.5 hp game fisher for 25 dollars. It runs fine it all works and is a little bigger than my 1969 6 H.P. evinrude. The rude pushes my old 13 foot v bottom almost to plane but just cant get there. I have heard that an air cooled power plant will make about 75% of the power that it's water cooled cousin will make. Is there any truth in that statement? I am going to buy it if nothing more as a back up in case something ever happens to my 6 hp evinrude. 25 dollars is not a great sum of money. Just wondering if I might consider it as a primary instead of a backup? Are these motors even worth the metal they are made of? To be honest it looks like a lawn mower engine bolted to a lower unit. However....

Re: old gamefisher

I am truly sorry it is a 1985 not a 1975, my most sincere apologies.

Re: old gamefisher

A properly-running Johnson 6hp will outperform any of the Eska-based Gamefisher 7.5 hp outboards. Guaranteed.

The Gamefisher, though, will break your heart one day.

Keep your 6hp and try moving some weight around in the boat and experiment with the tilt settings on the motor.

Mine planes my 12' aluminum boat just fine, at about 15 mph. But, I had to move some things around, and it won't plane it with two people on board.

What kind of boat do you have the 6hp on?

Re: old gamefisher

No doubt about that, I have no intention of getting rid of my old evinrude, it's on a 1957 13 foot seaking v bottom. It's old it's heavy, it's ugly, and it's payed for and has brought home more bluegill and catfish than any three of these thin hulled so called jon boats that bass pro or cabellas has ever sold. I love my old boat, it has character, and spirit. I was just wondering what to expect out of this thin skinned engine that I am buying. My old evinrude will always be mine.

The 7.5 vibrates,is noisy,finicky and underpowered.
Check the vertical height of the 6 you may be able to raise it slightly by adding 1/4" sticks to the top of the transom.Might give you a little speed.
Carefully adjust the trim.Get a tiller extension so you can sit on the middle seat. Our old steel 12ft flat bottom used to pop on plane (50ft) with 5hp Gale,a 180 pounder and a tiller extension.
