Old gas

Hi! I've got 55 gallons of stabilized gas in my tank which is 1.5 years old. Is this gas still good to use? The gas is high test BP to be run in a 1997 carb Honda 90 4 stroke. Can I add octane booster to increase lost octane?

I would smell the gas and if it doesn't smell rotten I would add the octane boost and burn it up.

Sounds good. I hate to waste it. Thought about siphoning into my pickup. But I'm itching to get out on the water now.

I can tell you that ethanol gas can go bad as quickly as 3 weeks and will usually not be good to use after 3 months. If you used a good ethanol stabilizer treatment you possibly could be able to use it. make sure to replace your water fuel seperator filter/s . ethanol is a water magnet. If your outboard does not like the old fuel drain it out and use it in your lawn mower, they tend to be a little more forgiving.

Burn it in the outboard! I would not bother to add octane unless your Honda was designed to burn high test. If the manual calls for regular, just burn it. As above, a gas/water separator would be a wise investment, but I have held 10% ethanol gas for a couple of years without it absorbing water. Just because it has ethanol in it doesn't mean it will automatically absorb enough water to separate in the tank.

YES! Consider this.... if the cap was on the tank and not oped to the elements..... you had added stabilizer..... Burn it up. You want to go!! People say ethanol is a magnet but it does not suck up water into a sealed container. ;)

I totaly agree with Bob, 1 1/2 years is not that long in a sealed tank, go have fun, it won;t take you long to use most of it and then top off with fresh gas. Why would you use high test in your Honda, I think it would run better on regular gas.

Re: Old gas

I would (and have done so) used old gas by mixing 4 to 5 gallons prior to my call fill up with high test gas. I just prefer using new fuel with my outboard. But all other opinions also sound right. Happy boating season.

Just as a point, octane is a measure of resistance to preignition so actually losing octane would be good since the gas would burn more readily, it has nothing whatever to do with how much power the gas gives you, it is actally harder to ignite.

Since high performance cars use high octane people have linked it to perfomance but it is the parts in the engine not the fual that make it high perfomance.

I really doubt anyone could tell if there engine was running racing gas or regular unleaded.

If it still smells like gas use it, as you burn some of it off replace with fresh, the engine may run a little off for ahwile but it won't hurt anything.

+1 Octane gains you nothing unless you have a high compression motor/blower. Adding octane booster will do exactly nothing for you.

If you think it won't burn in your boat, why would you put it in the pickup?
If the gas is bad it will be from water added due to condensation in the tank. Pump it into a truck, and you have the same water at the bottom of the tank, but now instead of not boating for the day you are calling a tow truck to get home.

Bad gas is bad gas. If you think it is bad, take it to recycle. If not, run it.
