Hold the flywheel, or turn flywheel. If you are trying to remove the gearcase, because the driveshaft is stuck? How are you going to get the upper bearing housing bolts out?

Re: old indian trick

I took the shift pivot screw out And I am tring to get the cradle back where it needs to be. I was told that I could do it without removing the lower unit(is this true?).I have the gearcase apart down to the pinion and was having a hard time breaking the nut loose that holds the pinion on.(my manual only shows how to do it with the lower unit off and using a special spline socket)I tried to turn the flywheel while holding the pinion nut but the nut on the flywheel came loose. any suggestions?---Troy

Lower unit must be removed from the exhaust leg. Very easy, ten minutes. When you drop the lower unit, the driveshaft will stay in the lower unit.

Then remove waterpump and plate on top of the lower unit and service the shift pivot pin from the top side. You should be able to do this without totally dis-assembling the lower unit.

It sounds like you have removed the prop and prop shaft, and are going at it from the bottom side.
