Old Johnson Coil Question

1955 Johnson QD16 - 10 hp

I'm in the process of changing out the coils, points and condensor on my old Johnson. Each coil has a coil wire which attaches at the bottom and runs through a plate. The directions that I have say to turn this plate over to remove the coil wire from the coil. But I can't seem to get this plate off.

Is this really necessary? Or can I just pull the wire free form the old coil?

If this plate needs to come off, how is it done?

Fishchaser--Let me get you started, then the old OMC mechs can help out if you have further difficulties. Assuming that you have disconnected the throttle linkage from the plate, the armature plate is held down with four screws, two of which pass through the coil laminations, two are situated just inboard of the points assembly. Before removing the armature plate, make note of how it is positioned on the engine; when it comes time to reinstall it, you don't want it to be rotated 180 degrees out of position. You can use a marker. Or take a photograph. Be cautious about seating the coils properly on installation, or they could rub the flywheel.

that is exactly right, and becareful of the kill wires that run thru also. i just tilt mine up enough to get the short screwdriver under there, to release the calms. when reinstalling i found it easier to use the long screws that go thru the coils (without the coils) to initially losely fasten the plate,(they are longer and easier to line up with the holes.) then put the short screws in, and remove the long screws, and install the goodies.
