old johnson/ evinrude controls question

I took her out today (after repairing the flywheel/crankshaft situation) Started right up... warmed her up... tuned high speed carb adjustment at WOT in gear...Check! Brought it down as low as the throttle cable would allow, again, in gear... Adjusted low speed needle (idled not smooth as silk, but not missing either)... Check!

Now when in neutral, if I bring throttle all the way down, it will be too slow to idle and will stall. Is this normal? I can adjust the cable some to maybe correct this... What is the general rule on that? I would prefer it did not because I am installing a kill switch and will use it to stop engine. Starts right back up though...

there should be an idle adjustment on the linkage where the control cable hooks to the motor. If it is the motor I am thinking about. Most likely broke off as these were made of nylon.

There is a black plastic piece (knurled edges) right where it attaches to the motor... if I turn it, it will shorten or lengthen the cable... is this what you are talking about?

That is exactly what he is talking about.
When you lengthen it a bit it will not allow the throttle cable to pull all the way back, thereby maintaining an adjustable minimal RPM.
You can also use it to set your perfect trolling speed.

Tom, The real old J/E controls had a knob on top of the control box, behind the two levers. This could set min throttle position. There was an adjustment for throttle friction as well.
