I inherited a 1974 85hp Johnson from my grandpa. It has been sitting up for about 12 years. I am wondering if it is worth trying to get running for starters, and if so what I need to do to it. Any advice would be great. Thanks! :)

I run a 1969 115hp Johnson. Get a good "factory" service manual and get it running. You will probably be supprised, a new battery, new water impeller, new lower unit oil, a little gas/oil mix spray in the cylinders, new gas, and it will probably fire right up.

Search this board for starting a stored engine.

I would.

Kris - The OMC V4s are great motors. Take the plugs out and see if you can move the flywheel. If so you motor is not frozen and can most likely be brought back to life without a lot of pain or $$. As aj sugested start with an OMC manual and go from there. Spend a bucket of time just browzing this site. Tons of useful info here.

Thanks for the tips guys I really appreciate them. Hopefully it is salvagable, because I really don't want to have to cough up the money for a new one.

you must change the water pumpand put some oil into the cylinders and roll in over to get the oil to the rings install new plugs.clean carbs and and when you start the motor let it idle for a bit so oil can get to the bearings and seals they will be dry
good luck they are a good motor
