Hey Guys,

I'm planning a project and I had a question. I plan on using an old 3.5 HP johnson outboard on a homemade pontoon boat(I'm using hobie hulls). It will be a lite boat and I only plan on 3-4 MPH tops.

My question is throttle control. I will be using cable/pulley for steering but how do i control throttle? This motor has the throttle that goes from left to right across the front(if my memory serves me correctly). Could I use a throttle cable from say a riding lawnmower and mount it and bolt the end of the cable to the throttle control? Not sure how to handle it. Any help would be great.

That engine was never made for, or intended to be remote controled. A lawn mower cable run's the throttle. You have to also advance the spark. That's what that lever on the front does. Gas, and spark advance both.

I'm with you on it never being designed for it, but I think it can be done. That slider that advances spark and fuel should be able to be moved using a cable from a lawnmower, motorcycle, etc.... It just needs to move a pretty good distance and thats where the problem might start. Just seeing if anyone has any better ideas. I'm temped to put a 5 hp briggs aircooled outboard on it, but I have this one laying around.

Believe it or not, Martn had a remote control adapter for just such a situation. A real Goldberg, but...

However, you might want to consider a cable that only controls the carburetor throttle and leaves the spark at full advance. That is what they do on racing motors.
