I have an old Johnson outboard motor Model number JH19A. Serial number B107719. In my research I found that it should be a 1964 model. It is in mint condition and used only about six times in it's life. I don't know anything about the features of it the motor and I would like to know as much as possible about this motor so I can sell it. Does anyone know what it is worth? Thanks for any help.

Re: old johnson questions

Welcome to iboats. :)

1964 3Hp. Probably has a weedless drive. If the prop doesn't sit perpendicualr to the motor, it's a weedless. They kinda point down. Hopefully it has new coils. The originals would be in bad shape by now. It should get a new water pump impeller because the old one is probably hard and likely to break in the first few minutes of running. Points gap is .020, sparkplug gap .030. 16oz outboard oil to 3 gallons regular unleaded. It's hard to place a value on it until these things have been done. $50 - $100. Even fixed I doubt you could get $150, but a pristine and original condition motor might catch the eye of a collector, but they never want to pay much anyhow. :(

What WBW said, except:

Though a few old timers still suggest the 24:1 mix for all JW and JH series engines, OMC said that starting with 1964 models 50:1 was the recommended mix. That would be 8oz TC-W3 oil to three gallons 87 octane gas. The richer mix would not harm the engine, it would just cost more and smoke more.

Oh, and Champion spark plugs only. J4C.

Good luck, and welcome to iboats. :)

Re: old johnson questions

WBW - the "W" in JW-models indicates the weedless unit. A JH should be a right-angle drive. The "H" in JH-models stood for High Thrust as those typically had a different gear ratio and big-ear props... They were often long shafts set-up for auxilary use...

JB - The JH/JW series are largely bronze bearing motors and really should have the richer mixture. OMC tried to offer the blanket claim of 50:1 as being okay for all, but I've got a pile of holed blocks that says otherwise... 32:1, maybe, but not 50:1...

- Scott
