I just found a old Johnson outboard motor. Its green and small Im guessing its a 2-4 hp but it doesnt say anywhere on it.It has a recoil starter that was off a laying on the ground next to it and I exspect that was broke and whoever threw it out couldnt get it started and just said the hell with it . the only #s I can find is on the side of the case and it is 570573. What is it?

That sounds like a casting number, and I can't seem to find any information from it. If you can't find a tag on the transom clamp, check the welsh plug for any numbers. The welsh plug is a silver, convex "core plug" located near the spark plug end of the block.

How many cylinders does the outboard have? Could you describe the recoil starter a bit? IE, does it engage the flywheel from the side or the top? Does it resemble an electric starter?

I'm sure we can pin this down for you. Green suggests late 60's or 70s. But it depends on the shade. No hope of a picture is there?

It has a HD 25 on it below the # I looked around a little and I think it is a 2 1/2 HP made between 1946 and 1950.I found a site with a old catalog from 1947 and it has a picture that looks pretty close .The recoil engages from the top.
