I've been having a blast running one or the other lately.
I have a problem with the throttle control on the Johnson 1958 18hp. If I let go of the twist grip it will slowly 5-10seconds go all the way to the stop position. It would be nice if it stopped in the idle area and didn't have so much spring return.

Also it's not going full butterfly open I see no way to adjust that. The bushing or whatever in the linkage seems real loose is that it? I did notice just the "drape" of the plug wires makes for some degree of recoil acion.
Re: Old Junk

I am of absolutely no help to you on the Johnson. The only comment I have is I have that Mercury's twin sitting in my storage shed. I wish the newer ones had as good looking lines as the older ones...

Kev_alask***

Re: Old Junk

Nice engines, nice pictures!
The 18HP Johnson looks about the same as my 1966 Johnson 6HP. Had the same problems. First I replaced the worn roller. Mine is smaller. A piece of a new rubber hose works just fine for it. In your case it might be hard to find a rubber hose in that size. But if you find one it will take care of the butterfly problem (not open fully). I guess it is hard to find a new roller, right?

I also made a throttle stop to take care of the idle problem. On the 6HP there is a bolt I used to bolt the throttle stop (a piece of aluminium). Can't see a bolt there in your pictures. I could not figure out how it was supposed to work when it was new. There is no friction screw anywhere.

Re: Old Junk

For your throttle creep problem check out you local motorcycle shop and see if they have a bolt on cruise control. It works with friction and if I remember right there is no drilling as it clamps on.
