I have an older mairner 40hp with these numbers on it: 676BS 000449. I know it is a japanese mariner, and maybe a 78', could someone tell me if this correct? Also does anyone know if the japaneese mariner and the tohatsu 40c are made by the same people? I have one of each and they are very similar. I was also wondering why the mariner has a place for an electric starter, but no teeth on the flywheel. Is it possible to get a flywheel and starter at a reasonable price?

Why do people frown on older outboards? So what if it is 25 years old. It runs just as good as any motor. Older yet, it is on a 1965 arkansas traveler 14' alulminum boat. That 40 hp on that boat performs pretty well. You can have your big, new, high dollar boats and engines, but I can take my boat fishing in places you wouldn't think of going for fear of getting a scratch on it.

I believe you miss understood. Finding a reasonable priced starter, flywheel, and maybe wiring harness for a 25 year engine is not going to be easy.

Re: old mariner 40 hp??

scratch my boat? high dollar new engines? what are you smoking. my newest boat is a 1984 and my oldest is a 1960.

re-read my post.

older yamahas usually turn to dust. ive never really seen one that old in one peice. the older imports suzuki, honda, yamaha, they all turn to dust. the metals they used werent the best for our waters here.

i have many many many motors that are way older that your "old" 1978. 1978 is not old, but used parts for that vintage of an imported outboard are gonna be almost darn near hard to get in good working order.

by the way, welcome to iboats!

Well, I didn't mean to attack you personally. I just get a kick at people when I go to the lake to fish and they are in their $25,000 bass boat but they cant get to the fish like they want to because there is brush and trees where a lot of the fish are. Thats how a lot of the lakes in my area are. I hope that my motor stays together better than the ones you described. Thanks for the welcome!
