The boat that I have now has gotten in pretty bad shape. I feel that it is beyond economical repair. My engine is a 1985 Evinrude 150XP. I am looking at a new boat to put my engine on.
In specific I am looking at the Starcraft Starfish 176. It is rated to a 150 so I am good there.
My questions are Two fold
1) Will I have any problems with the new boat old motor combination?
2) I have heard that there are some manufactures that will void the warranty if a jack plate is used. Does this hold true to any ones knowledge?

Thanks,
Steve

Why do you think you need a jack plate??? The older motor and newer boat will be fine however....... there really is no need for a jackplate or setback unless there is a reason.

I would call the manufacturer on the warranty specifics.

If the warranty won't allow the jack plate you can either wait for the warranty to end or build up the structure so the jack plate can't break things. I think if had an outboard I'd want a set back jackplate. Then I could control the whole deal.
I'm so jealous of you guys who can manage how the power gets to the water. All I have is power trim, I'm sure there is great performance to be had with the way outboards can be moved.

Re: Old meets new

I was asking about the jack plate because I have one. I was not aware of the warranty issue. It is one of those things that I heard, and have not been able to find out for sure because the manufacturer doesn't work on the weekend.
The substantiation for the void warranty was the jack plate puts a lot more stress on the transom. I don't buy that the plate will add stress to the transom??
Any thoughts on that?

Thanks,
Steve

Your thoughts and our thoughts have nothing to do with the Mfg. warranty - call Starcraft or talk to the dealer.. You are thinking of buying a new Starfish. right? SC Starfish warranty http://www.starcraftmarine.com/Showroom/Warranty.aspx?TypeId=37&SeriesId=133&ModelId=1601&Type=Fishing%20Boats&Series=Starfire/Starfish&Model=Starfish%20176

As far as adding stress to the transom, of course to does. You're putting 250-300 lbs. of motor 4-6" off the transom which increases leverage. How much - who knows. But that might be why SC wouldn't warrant damage with a jack plate if that's the case.
